The topic I have chosen for my practical proposal paper is to improve the parking and commute at The University of Houston.  This is a large problem because of all the cars and traffic that piles up at UH.  Students have to arrive at least an hour early to give enough time for a parking hunt.  This parking problem impacts everyone from the staff, to police force, to the transportation system but most important the students.  Students have a lot of disadvantages; they can be late to class.  They have to fight for parking, which can result in accidents and confrontations between the drivers.  They have to park far away from campus, which gives an opening to being mugged, robbed, and even dehydrated from heat exhaustion.  UH is not in the safest part of town and just because we have cops doesn’t mean that we are safe.  I get alerts all the time about how a student was assaulted in the parking lot.  The dean and the transportation department have the power to make a difference in this constant parking struggle.  This can be resolved by building more parking garages close to the school.  The benefits from this proposal is that we’ll have more parking in one area because all the parking will go up not all over the land.  We are going to have to sacrifice some parking but the ending outcome will be better.  This will end up costing the school a lot of money but they can take it from the cost of parking.  Parking is already too expensive and they sold more parking permits than what they have parking so part of the money can come from that.   We can put money from parking tickets given to students there at tons of tickets given away every day.  This proposal should be enacted because it will help everyone in the future.  This school is growing and it will only get more congested so why not work at it now to make it better for future generations.  This will be better than other proposals because you never know how many more students will join UH in the future.

2. In The Daily Cougar there were a couple of articles that jumped at me about student parking.  There was one article “UH Deals with Parking” by Angela Coufal and Christopher Patronella Jr. that talked about, as the title says, different ways the school is dealing with parking.  They mention how the school is building new garages that can work with the student’s needs.  They mentioned a few solutions one was the parking garage at the Energy Research Park that has 500 additional spaces and students can just take the shuttles to the campus.  Also at the grass lot has been opened at Bayou Oaks with 74 spaces available.  There is also another article by the same Angela Coufal and Christopher Patronella jr. titled “Parking Situation Should Improve”.  In this article they talk about how there were about 25,590 permits sold but only 12,702 are available to students on campus.

3. I would choose both of this stories for my practical proposal paper because they come hand in hand.  The second article is mainly about the frustrations of students and The first article is mainly about the solutions the school is coming up with to improve this on going problem.  My research question would be what action can be taken to improve parking and the commute to UH campus?  To come up with a solution i could interview workers at the UH Parking and transportation services, The dean of UH, The vice president, etc…  I could look through different school articles, the school website.

4. I’m also considering this issue for my practical proposal paper.  I work at a Bank in the intersection of Kuykendahl and Louetta.  They just build 4 medians at that intersection that block the entrance to our bank and to many other business.  All of the business have shown a decrease in customer because if you’re not coming in the right direction there are a thousand maneuvers that you have to do to go to your destination.   There is one business there that is already talking about closing down because there has been such a great lose in their sales.  At our bank we are so slow sometimes that we have to find other things to do to keep us busy.  We have customers complaining all of the time about the new change and expect us to do something about it but the reality is that there is nothing we can do for the time being.  This is interesting to me because it impacts my work.  I honestly would rather be steady than dead, the time goes by so slow when there are no customers and if they at least shorten those medians a little the flow of customers would increase again and so would sales.

The topic i have chosen is how different age groups think about the trend in communication websites such as facebook, myspace, twitter and such.  My topic question is What impact do different websites such as facebook, myspace, twitter, etc have on different age groups?  The topic is interesting to me because there is a big craze going on about all the websites that even businesses and networks follow them.  I myself have a facebook, myspace, hi5, and migente.  The only reason I joined is because either a friend or family has asked me to.  But the fact is that once you join you get hooked on it, I haven’t joined twitter yet because i’m scared that i’ll get hooked on that too.  I will join thought, to get more information on my topic.  I’ve come up with a few ideas such as why do each individual join the site.  An idea for an older crowed would be to follow their kids, to see what they are into, what influences them and who they affiliate with.  Another idea could be to find love, friendship, or even a one night stand.  Reasons for a younger crowd could be for popularity reasons, to make friends, to know about the latest gosip etc.

Believe

In Labor Day and the American Dream by William McGurn, he says that college isn’t for everyone.  We really don’t need an education to be successful in life.  There are many ways to earn money without having a four year college degree.  In this article McGurn introduces Mr. Lerman that says that you don’t need a four year degree to earn the same or more as someone with a four year degree would.  He says that both a physical therapist and a plant operation get a higher wage than the average mean of Americans, which is 42,000 a year.   He states that both of this jobs are done by people with a high school education and some extra training. McGurn also talks about a young 25 year old male named Keegan Abendschoen.  He started mowing lawns and now has two employees.  He is taking classes and expanding his business to layouts of driveways and walkways.  Which goes to show that you don’t need a four year degree to be successful.  I work at a bank and i get a lot of people that didn’t even achieve a high school education.  They have their own cleaning or landscaping business.   They are doing very well for themselves, they are their own boss and have workers working for them.  They learn to manage their business and their workers without a four year degree.

Doubt

In order to have a good paying, steady job we must have an education.  There are many people that think that all they need is a job and not an education.  The fact of the matter is that without an education they’ll struggle to get money.  They will have to settle for a low paying job, or for hard manual labor.  A person without an education has to work twice as hard as someone that has a four year degree.  Compare  a Dentist and Cook,  a Dentist has an education therefore gets paid way more than a cook that has no education.  If you have a degree there is a higher probability that you’ll have a steady job because not every single person is certified in your field to do your job.  If you are just a cook anyone can take your job because anyone that can follow instructions can do it.  You don’t need a four year degree to be a cook therefor anyone with the will to work can try to take your job.   This means that you have to work twice as hard to keep your job and you have to worry that your job can be taken away by someone younger or better than you.  If you are a landscaper you have to work long hours, outside in the hot sun and there is no certainty that the person you landscaped for today wants you to do the job next week.  Also if you don’t have an education, you may end up with a job that has absolutely no benefits.   When you’re a landscaper if you don’t work you don’t get paid.  If you have your own landscaping business, you usually don’t have sick pay or vacation, or medical.  It becomes harder to not have an education and with a four year degree thing become less hectic and less stressful.

Orientation Response 09/01/2009

The main issue in this story is whether or not to take this job.  It is only the first day and you are being told the ins and outs of the company and what the job implies.  It seems that no matter what you do you can be let go.  If you make an emergency phone call without permission, you can be let go.  If you ask too many questions, if you don’t finish your work on time or if you finish your job too early, you can be let go.  Also, the people that work there seem to have something dis-functional going on in their lives.  There is about five employees that have a love hate relationship with each other, they all seem to be stuck in a love triangle.  There is one employee, Anita Bloom, that nobody talks to.  Apparently if you talk to her she will tell you how and when you’re going to die.  The best thing for people to do is to stay away from her.  There is also Barry Hacker’s wife, which is dead, she seems to haunt everyone in the building.  She has been seen by employees walking, in monitors, in photocopies, she leaves messages for her husband.  This are many reasons that can make a person turn around and run away screaming.  But not everything is bad though, they have a lot of great perks.  They have a great health plan that covers everything for the employees themselves and their families.  It doesn’t matter how many dependents you have, they will all be covered under the plan.  They have a good vacation plan, a pension plan, good sick policy, a disability insurance.  They get extra discounts and blocked seating at the ballpark.  They get an hour lunch break plus two fifteen minute breaks.  All great reasons for a person to stay at a job.  One comment this story seems to make is that you have to be able to take the bad in with the good.   This company has many perks but with those perks comes the strictness and rules of the job and the drama of the co-workers.   The readers can relate with this story because who hasn’t been in that situation before.  Every working adult and even child for that matter, have gone through the first day.  Everyone knows what it is like and how hard it is to be new somewhere, to have to adapt to new policies, new rules, new people and new procedures.  They know that they have to comply with the regulations in order to get the ending result.   This may be a steady paycheck or a good grade.  They know that if they get sidetrack and not follow the rules they may be let go.
